“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

In our search to always improve, I am sure you have noticed the changes we’ve made to our magazine. Starting with this issue, we increased the number of pages to provide you with additional inspiration and helpful insight. We have also taken the opportunity to enhance the look and feel of our print magazine for our subscribers and retail buyers. For me, what makes VICARIOUS so unique is the holistic approach we take to the experience of reading a print magazine. It is as much about touch and feel as it is the incredible stories and photography provided by our world-class team. As a result, we have upped the ante as we keep moving forward on our never-ending pursuit to be extraordinary. We have also taken this moment to define our stories in three unique channels and this is reflected in our new tagline: Drive, Ride, Discover. For some, that may mean opening the magazine and going straight to their favourite channel and we hope this makes it easier for you to do so. It’s also an excuse for us to showcase additional exceptional photography, because there is truth in the old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. So let the photos speak! I would like to take this moment to thank you for your loyalty in 2024. Everything we do is for our readers and we take great pride in delivering you Canada’s #1 automobile and motorcycle experiential magazine. Of course, we have much more planned for the new year and beyond and we can’t wait to share it with you. But for now, settle into a comfy chair, pour yourself a favourite drink (hot or cold) and let the adventure of VICARIOUS begin once again!

THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US, the new year is in sight and the air is crisp with anticipation for what lies ahead in 2025. This past year was filled with many surprises, some exhilarating, some challenging, but all pushing us forward to be better. Our contributors travelled the globe crisscrossing North America, Europe, Asia and some of the remotest parts of the Earth to drive or ride the best and brightest new vehicles in the market. We stayed and dined in some of the most exceptional locales you can imagine and came home with stories to tell that we hope stir your travel dreams as much as they do ours. I am particularly inspired by Maya Angelou’s quote above as a moto for anything in life. Our team at VICARIOUS is committed to the sentiment it offers and I believe it shows in every issue we publish and online at Vicariousmag.com. If you haven’t checked out the website yet, let me just say, there is so much more to explore, you don’t want to miss it.

“For me, what makes VICARIOUS so unique is the holistic approach

we take to the experience of reading a print magazine.”

Matt Bubbers is a car critic and columnist who, for the last decade, has covered cars, culture, public policy, the auto industry and the (increasingly electric) future of transportation for The Globe and Mail and Sharp magazine. His work has also appeared in variety of publications throughout the U.S. and Canada, including CAA, Hagerty, Sotheby’s, Jalopnik, AutoTrader, Autoweek and, of course, here at VICARIOUS . His story about tracing the route of the Targa Florio through Sicily was nominated for a National Magazine Award in 2013. This job takes him to far-flung places to drive far-flung exotic cars, often around racetracks or over sand dunes or across frozen lakes. When not travelling on assignment, he’s at home with his family in Toronto, trying but mostly failing to maintain a garage full of needy old cars and an impulsively- purchased motorcycle. Yes, he knows he has the best job in the world and no, he doesn’t have a favourite car.

Peter Bleakney is a multiple award-winning member of AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) and has been writing about cars and car culture for almost thirty years. Originally a long-time contributor to the Toronto Star Wheels section, Peter currently writes for AutoTrader, Post Media, Sharp magazine, Robb Report , and of course VICARIOUS , where in this issue he drives the new Porsche 911 Carrera T and takes us to Wolfsburg for the celebratory 2024 GTI FanFest. When not travelling to far off locals to test vehicles, he works as a professional freelance bass player in the Toronto area, doing theatre, live gigs, recording and his own project, Wolfenboys. Peter is also committed, for better or worse, to keeping his 2001 VW GTI and 2001 Porsche Boxster S on the road forever, which pretty much precludes any notions of slowing down.

2025 FERRARI 12CILINDRI SPECTACULAR IS JUST THE START

DRIVER'S SEAT

LOOK, I’M SORRY TO SAY THIS BUT it’s spectacular. It’s even better than you imagine. It’s like driving a bolt of golden light thrown by Zeus himself across the surface of the Earth. For us mere mortals it’s a sublime experience. It’s pure and beautiful, and I know that’s not what you wanted to hear. It’s not what I wanted to write. These stories are more fun when the cars are crap. Please know that I take no pleasure in telling you a $554,439 Italian coupe that only a handful of people will ever get to enjoy is, actually, quite good. But it is. That the 2025 Ferrari 12Cilindri might never have existed, or that it might be the last of its kind, only makes it that much sweeter. Like the very first Ferrari in 1947, this one is a front-engine, rear-drive machine powered by a V12 engine that’s unencumbered by turbochargers or heavy hybrid systems. Sadly, there’s no gated- manual gearbox — only an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic — but even the

most obnoxious #savethemanuals zealots will forget about the lack of a clutch pedal when this engine enters the upper half of its rev range. This sort of engine — a 6.5-litre naturally-aspirated V12 that revs to 9,500 rpm and puts out 819 horsepower — was supposed to be a dying breed, killed off by the urgent need to clean up our transportation sector and reduce climate-change causing emissions. Even the gasoline-loving people at Lamborghini paired their latest V12 engine with a hybrid system. McLaren and Aston Martin shifted to turbochargers for their big engines. Every decent mass-market automaker made the switch long ago. But Ferrari knows exactly which regulatory loopholes to drive through just as well as the brand knows its customers. Ferrari does sell a twin-turbo V6 hybrid sports car, and it’s very nice. The Italian firm also offers an SUV and will soon unveil its first all-electric car. But the customers who want to drop over half- a-million dollars on a Ferrari grand-

18

driving out of corners — it’s how much of the 819 hp gets down to the road that’s truly surprising. The old 812 Superfast was the same way. In part that’s due to clever electronics, but it’s also due to the extremely linear nature of this V12’s power delivery. It builds and builds and builds and keeps building long past the point where you think it’s time to grab another gear. Compared to the 812, the engine’s noise isn’t quite as spine-tingling, but let this V12 run above 5,000 rpm and it can still inspire awe. The extremely quick-ratio steering seems to rear your mind. The rear-wheel steering system (which is now able to adjust the angle of each rear wheel independently) makes the car freakishly agile. That takes some getting used to because your eyes simply can’t believe it. Looking out over the endless hood your brain is telling you it should handle like a yacht, but it’s more like a jet-ski. Press the bumpy-road button on the steering wheel and you could use this car like a yacht, though, taking a quick jaunt along the Riviera from Cannes to Nice. Like all modern Ferraris it’s more comfortable than it has any right to be. I could do without the extra screen in front of the passenger and those touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel are finicky but these issues are minor. Simply looking at the 12Cilindri is exciting. Its designers were inspired by the sci-fi drawings of Syd Mead and 1970s futurism and, obviously, the Ferrari Daytona of the late 1960s. Seen outside in the sunshine the 12Cilindri looks utterly original, not to mention low and long. Make up your own mind, but I think it’s much better-looking than the 812 Superfast or any other front-engine Ferrari since the 550 Maranello. Driving this golden lightning bolt is a reminder of why we all like cars and driving them in the first place. It’s part power- fantasy, part senseless infatuation with all things mechanical and well-made, part skill and part monkey-brain thrill-seeking. Again, I’m sorry, but the new Ferrari really is spectacular.

tourer are looking for a particular sort of experience; they’re looking to mainline pure Ferrari and that’s exactly what the 12Cilindri delivers. As Jacopo Marcon, Ferrari’s product marketing manager for the 12Cilindri said: “with this model we’re keeping our purist tradition alive, addressing those clients for whom Ferrari means the most.” It rained in Luxembourg the night before my drive and the roads here are still wet and greasy, covered with leaves, and 819 horsepower deserves respect. It’s not that the rear end tweaks sideways faster than you can think — if you’re foolish enough to ask for too much power

THERE ARE PLACES WORTH protecting. Places that make our distant past seem far closer than we imagined. A stone's throw off the Spanish coast rests Mallorca, the largest island within the Mediterranean Sea's Balearic Island chain. Now known as a shelter for European snowbirds, as well as a favourite among youthful partygoers from the mainland— the 1,400-square-mile island wears its history on its sleeve, where glimpses of Roman, Moorish, and Spanish rule are all laid bare for us to see. Perhaps having history on tap sparked something with our friends in the Commonwealth since the island was chosen to launch its updated 2025 Triumph Speed Twin 1200 lineup of machines—not that the decidedly balmy weather and sunny skies weren't encouraging enough. The British brand rightfully stands as a faithful custodian concerning all things Bonneville, which the Speed Twin 1200s with their 1200cc parallel-twin engines,

classic steel-cradle frames, and timeless charm are born from. Though, as the Speed Twin moniker suggests, this is a sportier extension of the Bonneville platform. Now in its third generation, the Speed Twin 1200 ($15,495 CDN) is joined by an up-spec Speed Twin 1200 RS ($18,395 CDN). They share an engine, of course, pumping out a little more top-end power these days; styling updates that don't stray too far from the Bonneville lines and are as striking as ever, as well as cornering ABS and traction control. Between them, the price reflects what's seen on the spec sheet—Marzocchi suspension with only preload in the rear for the standard bike, while the RS fork is fully adjustable, as are its upgraded Öhlins shocks. Triumph-branded J.Juan callipers are fitted to the standard bike, leaving the RS set to receive Brembo Stylema units. Road and Rain riding modes are on either machine, though the RS gets a Sport mode along with a bi-directional quickshifter.

RIDER'S SEAT

Each bike boasts Metzeler rubber, with the RS reaching for racetrack-ready Racetec RR K3 kicks while sport-touring Sportec M9RR tires adorn the base model. The biggest difference? That'd be the riding position since the RS nudges the handlebar forward and down while kicking the footpegs up and back. It's sportier without making things too wristy. Our morning started by heading into the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, an epic sheer-sided range ripe with narrow roads where the 1200cc parallel-twin and its claimed 105 horsepower and 82.6 pound-feet of torque can shine. The inviting, broad grunt we've learned to adore from this powerplant is a godsend when whipping through incessantly winding roads, where escaping second and third gear is a rarity. Save for a touch of abruptness on the initial throttle crack, Triumph's fueling prowess is on display once again, regardless of the ride mode you've chosen. Meanwhile, the cornering ABS is a value- added for riders and is indeed helpful when applying the binders through shade-hidden

24

damp patches. However, the traction control errs on the side of caution in any setting, as the TC light flashes frantically at less than impressive lean angles—if you were expecting the kind of leniency seen on Triumph's modern sportbike offerings, you'd be disappointed. Instead, turn it off or reel it in and enjoy the ride. And as for the quickshifter on the RS, it tends to clear up at higher rpms but is clunky down low, which isn't surprising for a retro p-twin engine. Blasting through quaint villages, either Speed Twin 1200 has fully embraced spirited riding. Sure, the base bike is damped a little lighter than its sibling, which makes wrestling it from side to side slightly less composed. So, too, does its rubber that isn't as sticky. Though, if you're imagining a scenario where it'd fall short of sporting expectations while sashaying across pristine Spanish tarmac, waylay those notions now. The short wheelbase and low centre of gravity keep each Speed Twin steady on. Yet, the RS does edge out a victory thanks to its firmer suspenders while drawing the rider toward the front end with its slightly more aggressive riding position, ushering in confidence that makes a rider forget it's a retro-styled motorcycle. Tipping the RS into turns while in the shadow of Puig Major, Mallorca's tallest peak, is deeply satisfying and will surely scratch any sporting vintage itch that you've ever had. Naturally, we'd be remiss not to mention the brakes: The Brembo stuff does offer a better feel and more bite at the level, but to say that J.Juan jobbers are substandard would be a bald-faced lie. Triumph isn't shy about its past, nor should it be, as it is a brand steeped in tradition and shoulders more than its fair share of the two-wheeled record. At times, being faithful can hinder progress, yet offerings like the Speed Twin 1200 and 1200 RS show that modernity and heritage don't need to be at odds. Some things must be protected, while others can live on in history. In moments like these, we get to live with them both.

“Blasting through quaint villages, either Speed Twin 1200 has fully embraced spirited riding.”

GOLF AS LIFE

Story I

Michael LoRé

GOLF ISN’T JUST A GAME. Nor is it solely a sport. It’s a lifestyle. It’s an obsession. It’s a way of life. From its earliest roots in Scotland to today’s technology-backed iterations, golf represents something unique to each person who has ever picked up a club. Golf can offer a much-needed reprieve from the modern-day rat race. It can provide valuable quality time among family and friends. It can scratch a competitive itch, especially for former athletes. It can be a never-ending quest for perfection. Ultimately, golf is the great equalizer. Whether your annual salary is $3 million or $30,000, you’re a famous actor or Kindergarten teacher, or are from Toronto or Timbuktu, golf doesn’t discriminate. Golf is man vs. nature. Nothing more. Nothing less. I first started playing in high school, not only because I wasn’t good at baseball, but because I knew golf would be a valuable tool later in life, regardless of what profession I got into. Hardly a new or unique perspective, I’m glad I picked up that old set of Spalding Executives from my friend’s father and began my life-long relationship with golf. Like many, the game has periodically come in and out of my life, but it’s always there in the background. Golf triumphantly returned to the forefront for me personally and professionally over recent years. Golf granted us an escape from so much uncertainty during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic and we haven’t looked back. As we approach 2025, golf is more popular than ever. Not only is the game growing, but it’s evolving and changing. Your stereotypical golfer of yesteryear is now the minority, with influences injected into the sport, culture and fashion from far beyond the clubhouse. Golf is cool. Golf

is young. Golf is diverse. Sure some still believe golf should be played at a country club with tucked in collared shirts and stiff khakis, but opportunities created by venues including Topgolf, Five Iron and PopStroke are introducing millions of non-golfers to the sport in once-unimaginable ways. One side isn’t right, nor is the other wrong. Your relationship to golf is just that—yours—and it may differ from someone else’s. At the end of the day, we’re all trying our hardest to conquer the unconquerable, one stroke at a time. Sand Hollow Resort Championship Course Hurricane, Utah Have you ever played golf on another planet? Neither have I, but if I had to guess what it would be like, especially if we’re talking about Mars, it would be similar to playing the Championship Course at Sand

Hollow Resort in Hurricane, Utah. I arrived at the course before the sun. Similarly to navigating another planet, venturing out in the vast desert of Southwest Utah, especially as a first timer in the dark amid new construction, development and detours, was no easy feat, but I successfully made it to the resort appropriately named for the nearby Sand Hollow State Park. Being greeted by friendly staff, especially that early in the morning, was a fantastic start to what would become an unforgettable day. As the sun began to rise, myself and the other early birds flocked to the driving range to shake off the morning chill that was a combination of Hurricane eclipsing 3,000 feet in elevation as well as it being

Having covered anything and everything from the World Series to surfing in Bali, Michael has honed his focus to covering and promoting the two sports he played a mid-fall afternoon. Paired with a trio of buddies in town for a marathon golf trip— after we finished our round they drove immediately to nearby Copper Rock for their next tee time—we started our day in the desert. The first hole featured a deceivingly open fairway as the course got progressively tougher as we sauntered on, wary of the impending heat. A wicked bunker in the middle of the second fairway will make anyone second guess their tee shot, while missing to the left of the green is another lurking nightmare that I unfortunately experienced. By the time we got to the par-3 third, the chill had dissipated as the sun supplanted itself smack dab in our eyesight for our tee shots.

Featuring varied topography, including a rock on the left side of the No. 6 fairway to use as a line off the tee, as well as obstacles aplenty including 69 total bunkers and plenty of red rock and desert vegetation, Sand Hollow’s back-9 is truly unforgettable. The par-3 11th with nothing but danger off to the right signifies a theme to come as the next few holes are played along a steep cliff. Balls get lost into the abyss to the left, while giant red rocks on the right can either be helpful or detrimental. I had the urge to take out my camera as much as my clubs as we continued our round on what seemed like another planet. If only my game was out of this world … Heading back to the clubhouse is equally as pleasing on the eye as you wind down the cart path surrounded by more red rocks to leave a lasting impression that you played a truly unique track. St. Andrews Strathtyrum Course St. Andrews, Scotland It was a picturesque day. Clouds blanketed the sky as the threat of rain seemed to loom at every turn. A stiff breeze bellowed off of St. Andrews Bay. Did I die and go to heaven? No. Better. I went to golf heaven.

It was my first trip to Scotland, so it couldn’t have been even more perfect to spend a day at the Home of Golf: St. Andrews. I heard about the seaside town countless times before, but kind of like visiting The Masters and Augusta National, you won’t believe it—and more importantly feel it—until you’re actually there with your feet on the ground. Surprisingly, it was better than I could have imagined. Everything and everyone oozed golf. Like the oxygenated air that gets pumped into casinos, there was something in the air above St. Andrews that left me intoxicated. After biding our time to scurry onto the 18th fairway on the Old Course for an efficient photoshoot at Swilcan Bridge, we regained our composure to focus on the task at hand: playing golf. While we didn’t play the Old Course, we were introduced to St. Andrews Links via the Strathtyrum Course. Opened in 1993 to complement the tougher championship layouts at the Home of Golf, our experience was stereotypical Scottish golf. Opting for a cart just in case it rained—it did—despite friendly banter from locals, we set about on our St. Andrews adventure. What Strathtyrum lacks in bunkers (15), it makes up for in strategy and target golf.

Yet somehow, I still found myself deep in one—OK, maybe two—of the pot bunkers. Those “cunningly placed” bunkers and endless amounts of sand and fescue don’t make the course a pushover by any means, though it is more attainable than the Old Course. After rightfully donating a few balls to the golf gods at the Home of Golf, I settled down and stopped putting pressure on myself to score well, realizing this was a once-in-a-lifetime—though hopefully not—opportunity. The name of the game at Strathtyrum is accuracy—not just off the tee, but with your irons and putter as well. While the greens are large, their slopes and borrows can cause even the most confident putters to shake in the wake. Stop to soak in unbeatable views of the town from a number of holes, including beyond the greens on No. 8 and 9. A split fairway on 18 tests your final few shots to the very end of the round as you return to the clubhouse to warm up with a whisky. With greens fees ranging between £25-55 depending on the time of year, the 5,628-yard, par-69 Strathtyrum Course is a perfect introduction to St. Andrews Links, making you yearn to return time and time again in an attempt to conquer the rest of the historic golf courses.

L.A.B. Golf DF3 Putter

Assuming you’ve seen the uniquely shaped putters taking the golf world by storm, then you’re familiar with L.A.B. Golf. An acronym for “lie, angle, balance,” L.A.B. technology

Puffy Jacket from Malbon’s Golf & Hunt Club collection. This durable ripstop nylon jacket doesn’t only offer warmth via primaloft insulation, but provides two looks in one because it’s reversible, giving wearers a brown/tan/green camo look as well as a can’t-miss safety orange side. Infamous Buckets swirl eyes can even be spotted throughout the camo pattern to give the jacket even more Malbon flair we’ve come to love on and off the course.

makes it easy for golfers to deliver a square putter face at impact because each putter stays square by itself throughout the stroke. With golf, and especially putting, a game of inches, if not millimetres, putting yourself in the best situation to shave strokes on the green can pay major dividends. The DF3 putter—Directed Force—is sleeker, smaller and “less weird” than prior models. Drive for show, putt for dough.

Payntr Golf Eighty Seven Speed Classic While Jason Day was turning heads this year on the PGA Tour with his outfits from Malbon, the former world No. 1 was also wear-testing the new Eighty Seven

Speed Classic from Payntr Golf. Named after Day’s favourite number—an homage to his birth year (1987)—the collection includes the brand’s full-length Carbitex directional carbon fiber propulsion plate to boost ground reaction forces for more power and speed in the downswing as well as a waterproof and breathable microfiber performance upper. With more subtle nods to Day’s favourite number like 87 perforated holes, this spiked golf shoe marries Paynter’s unmatched comfort with style and performance.

talking about picking up leaves, bugs and pine needles on greens. Since that can be tedious, especially this time of year, make life easier with the ZoomBroom Breeze. Designed on a golf course, this lightweight (under 2 lbs. with battery) cordless stick blower fits in your golf bag and clears greens in a breeze. With no obstacles in your way, can you blow away the competition by making that putt?
