MATT BUBBERS

PETER BLEAKNEY

Matt Bubbers is a car critic and columnist who, for the last decade, has covered cars, culture, public policy, the auto industry and the (increasingly electric) future of transportation for The Globe and Mail and Sharp magazine. His work has also appeared in variety of publications throughout the U.S. and Canada, including CAA, Hagerty, Sotheby’s, Jalopnik, AutoTrader, Autoweek and, of course, here at VICARIOUS . His story about tracing the route of the Targa Florio through Sicily was nominated for a National Magazine Award in 2013. This job takes him to far-flung places to drive far-flung exotic cars, often around racetracks or over sand dunes or across frozen lakes. When not travelling on assignment, he’s at home with his family in Toronto, trying but mostly failing to maintain a garage full of needy old cars and an impulsively- purchased motorcycle. Yes, he knows he has the best job in the world and no, he doesn’t have a favourite car.

Peter Bleakney is a multiple award-winning member of AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) and has been writing about cars and car culture for almost thirty years. Originally a long-time contributor to the Toronto Star Wheels section, Peter currently writes for AutoTrader, Post Media, Sharp magazine, Robb Report , and of course VICARIOUS , where in this issue he drives the new Porsche 911 Carrera T and takes us to Wolfsburg for the celebratory 2024 GTI FanFest. When not travelling to far off locals to test vehicles, he works as a professional freelance bass player in the Toronto area, doing theatre, live gigs, recording and his own project, Wolfenboys. Peter is also committed, for better or worse, to keeping his 2001 VW GTI and 2001 Porsche Boxster S on the road forever, which pretty much precludes any notions of slowing down.

MERCEDES LILIENTHAL

Award-winning journalist, photographer, and contributor for The New York Times, Car and Driver, Forbes, Autoblog, TREAD Magazine , and more, Mercedes Lilienthal creates engaging editorial covering the automotive industry, global travel and experiences tied to it, and inspirational people doing their part to change it. Mercedes was born to German immigrants who moved to the United States without knowing a word of English. A dual citizen of Germany and the U.S., Mercedes travels the world and competes in automotive rally events as a competitor/media. She’s partnered with automakers like Volkswagen of America, Subaru of America, and Jeep. She successfully piloted an all-electric crossover 1,400 miles across a barren desert with her co-driver, a map, and compass. Mercedes expects the unexpected. She documents each experience along the way.
